To a modern mind, it might seem puzzling why God emphasizes these actions so strongly. However, the significance lies in God’s expectation for His people to trust in His wisdom rather than seeking guidance from the spirit world. Trusting in God’s ways and teachings is essential, and consulting with supernatural entities can lead one astray from God’s path.
Manasseh’s actions went beyond idol worship, as he even placed a carved idol inside the temple of the Lord. This temple was meant to be a place where God’s name would be honored forever, as God had promised to David and Solomon. As a king and leader, Manasseh’s influence had a profound impact on his people, leading them astray.
Due to Manasseh’s actions, the people committed even greater evil than the pagan nations God had destroyed when the Israelites first entered the land.
Manasseh and his people disregarded all the warnings from the Lord. Consequently, the Assyrian army commanders captured him, treating him as a prisoner with a ring through his nose and bound in bronze chains. Taken away to Babylon, Manasseh found himself in deep distress.
Amidst his turmoil, he remembered the God of his father and humbled himself in prayer. The Lord listened and was moved by his plea. In an unexpected turn, the Lord brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem, restoring both him and his kingdom.
In this journey, Manasseh’s realization dawned upon him – the Lord alone is God.
