The battle ensues, and in accordance with the Lord’s declaration, the provincial commanders unleash their might upon the Aramean forces, resulting in a devastating slaughter. Following this triumph, the Arameans retreat. However, the prophet returns and advises Ahab to remain prepared for another assault, cautioning that Ben Hadad will return the following spring.
Ben Hadad’s advisers confidently assert that Israel’s God is limited to the hills and lacks power over the plains. As the following spring arrives, in fulfillment of the prophecy delivered by the unnamed prophet, Ben Hadad’s forces return to engage Israel on the plains. Once again, the Lord, speaking through the prophet, declares a promised victory. The Aramean army, vast in numbers, dwarfs the Israelite forces, appearing as mere specks in comparison. The prophet of God approaches Ahab and shares crucial insight, conveying the words of the Arameans who claimed that God’s authority was confined to the hills. Furthermore, the prophet assures Ahab that God will grant them victory.
Despite commanding a formidable army, Ben Hadad experienced a resounding and devastating defeat. Faced with this dire situation, his advisers counseled him to seek mercy from Israel, having heard of Ahab’s reputation as a compassionate and merciful king. Ben Hadad humbly approaches Ahab and receives mercy from him. However, God, being displeased with this act, sends the anonymous prophet back to Ahab once again.
